Much like I did last year, here’s the post appealling to your inner-good-person, the one who doesn’t care about the recession, because the recession doesn’t care about people who suffer traumatic brain injuries, strokes, accidents which leave them wheelchairing for life, etc.
I will not only vouch for the great things accomplished by Magee Rehab at 16th and Vine; I stand as evidence that they can take someone with a jelloed brain, busted back and an inability to move the right side of his body and get them back to the point where they were before a car ran them over. Think about all that next time you’re feeling down and out. Here are the releases about the annual fundraiser dinner, Night of Champions, which benefit wheelchair sports.

Magee Rehabilitation Hospital will present its 2010 Champion in the Community Award to the Katie Samson Foundation for its constant support of Magee’s Wheelchair Sports Program.
The award will be presented at Magee’s Tenth Annual Night of Champions fundraiser on May 7. The event– featuring dinner, music, raffle prizes and live and silent auctions– benefits Magee’s nationally recognized Wheelchair Sports Program, which provides former Magee patients and individuals with disabilities in the community with the opportunity to improve their quality of life through physical activity and competition. Sports offered through Magee include wheelchair basketball, rugby, tennis, and soccer.
The Katie Samson Foundation was created after local Pennsylvania lacrosse player Katie Samson was paralyzed from the chest down as a result of a sledding accident in 2000. Since then, Katie, her friends, family and supporters have run the annual Katie Samson Lacrosse Festival, bringing dozens of men’s and women’s lacrosse teams and thousands of fans together in Radnor, PA each year for a one-day celebration of the game. Proceeds are given to Magee and other charities that support spinal cord injury research, care, and quality of life improvements to those with spinal cord injuries. To date, the Katie Samson Foundation has raised more than 1 million dollars. This year’s festival will be held April 24 at Radnor High School.
The Tenth Annual Night of Champions begins at 6:30 pm, and will be held at the Sheet Metal Workers Union Hall at 1301 South Columbus Blvd, Philadelphia. Eagles’ coach Andy Reid will be joining other celebrities from the Philadelphia sports world, including Howard Eskin, Adam Taliaferro, Billy Cunningham, Fran Dunphy, Mike Mamula, Scott Palmer, Joe Conklin, Pat Morris, Dave Shultz, Jon Harris, (Jon Runyan) and Brian Propp, at Magee Rehabilitation Hospital’s Tenth Annual Night of Champions held on May 7. The event, which begins at 6:30 pm, will once again be held at the Sheet Metal Workers Union Hall at 1301 South Columbus Blvd, Philadelphia. (MEDIA ARE INVITED TO COVER THE EVENT)
One of the most successful head coaches in recent NFL history, Andy Reid has really put his stamp on this city’s beloved football team. After taking over a 3-13 club on January 11, 1999, Reid has been masterful in turning the Eagles into one of the NFL’s elite teams. During his tenure, Reid, has earned NFL coach of the year honors twice, compiled the best win total (107), winning percentage (.611), and playoff victory total (10) in team history. He has captured five division titles and five trips to the NFC Championship game.
The Night of Champions event includes dinner, raffle prizes and auctions of autographed sports memorabilia, exclusive gifts, restaurant certificates, getaway weekends, and travel packages. All funds benefit Magee’s Wheelchair Sports Programs, which support athletic programs that help former Magee patients and individuals with disabilities in the community improve the quality of their lives through physical activity. Programs include wheelchair basketball, rugby, tennis, and soccer. Magee’s wheelchair sports programs have involved more than 450 athletes over the past 21 years.
