Joe and Marvis Frazier at Frazier's North Philly gym, 2009
Having written about Joe Frazier several times in recent years, it saddens me to report that his business manager and friend Les Wolff just confirmed reports that Joe is critically ill with liver cancer. It’s at an advanced stage. It doesn’t look good for the former heavyweight champion of the world.
Les said he’s getting an overwhelming number of calls from concerned friends and supporters. We’ll catch up later this afternoon, but in the meantime, he asks for prayers and support.
While waiting for today’s card’s two main fights I want to one again say that my thoughts and prayers are with Joe Frazier and his family.

Our son Dennis was a boxer and a teacher. He idolized Joe Frazier for his boxing ability and his wonderful character. We lost our son recently so I am writing this tribute for him. Dennis tried to emulate Joe’s concern for underprivileged children and became a Special Education teacher to help them improve. If he were alive he would say, “Hang in there, Champ. We love you.”

I know it’s hard on the family to see joe so ill. My prayers are with them. Marvis,I know how close you and your dad are. He has told me what a good son you are. If you need to talk you know I’ll be here for you. God be with you.
I was proud to work with Smoke in the 90’s, representing him on various live events/shows. Not only is he the best heavy-weight champ ever, he is a good, loving, caring man with a fantastic sense of humor. Smoke always went the extra mile in all of our promotions; shaking every hand and signing autographs till the last fan. Always a pro! It is an honor to know him. GOD BLESS SMOKIN JOE FRAZIER!

I love boxing, and anybody that does has to love Smokin’ Joe. He had the biggest heart I ever saw in a man, both in and out of the ring. I hope God finds a special place for him.

Being a female I did not like boxing…UNTIL Smokin Joe and Ali came along. What class Joe demonstrated! What moves – just straight ahead. I had the thrill to meet him in person at Morehouse College and he was so nice to pose for a picture with Michael Sphinx – I have treasured it ever since, Joe, as ever, with a big smile, and a “No. 1”. He was there and Ali was on the program!
God bless – and grant you comfort. May the Frazier family find strength in the fact that people they do not even know are pulling for Joe & saying, Thanks for the memories! Boxing is NOTHING like it used to be.

Joe was a great warrior with a big heart. Ali I know will be saddened as we all are to hear he is unwell. This is his greatest ever fight I hope and pray that he can win. People like Joe give us the strength to carry on even when the odds are against us. God bless you
