WORCESTER — An Ayer man now facing his third drunken driving charge is accused of killing a woman and injuring a man — dragging the woman several hundred yards in a hit-and-run incident in Worcester Saturday night, police said.
Daniel Depew, 29, was arrested one mile away and less than hour after the grisly 7 p.m. collision on Lincoln Street when police said he pulled his black Dodge Charger onto the campus of Worcester Polytechnic Institute without headlights on and struck a plastic pylon.
Depew is charged with his third drunken driving offense, motor vehicle homicide as a result of driving drunk, possession of an open container of alcohol, unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, failure to slow for a pedestrian in a roadway, leaving the scene of an accident resulting in both personal injury and death, a red-light violation and failure to stay within marked lanes.

A driver who told police he intentionally hit a man with his car, killing him, in Montgomery County on Friday has been ordered held without bond.
Ryan Anthony Salandy, 22, of Germantown, is charged with first-degree murder in the death of William Dean McDaniel, 21, of Clarksburg. Police said Salandy admitted he intentionally struck McDaniel with his car in a Clarksburg neighborhood Friday afternoon after the two men argued.
Salandy is a Christian rapper and college student, friends and family who prayed outside the courthouse in Rockville said Monday afternoon. He and McDaniel are believed to have known each other and argued over a transaction related to a music recording, Montgomery County Police Capt. Paul Starks said.

INDIANAPOLIS – Metro police have made an arrest in a hit-and-run crash that killed a 13-year-old girl more than four years ago.
Hadleigh Cave was struck by a vehicle near Thompson and Franklin roads on the southeast side late on March 4, 2011. She was taken to Methodist Hospital in critical condition and died the following day.
“I think that it’s a shame because I think that she would have been an amazing woman, and I think it’s a shame that no one will get to see that,” said Cave’s mother, Britt Garner.
The vehicle responsible for striking Cave left the scene of the crash.
Investigators say earlier this summer, they received new information that led them to pursue 44-year-old Christopher Stimac as a suspect in the girl’s death.
“It doesn’t bring her back. But at the same time, I feel like she deserves the justice and I believe somebody should be held accountable for plowing through her and leaving her on the side of the road like she’s nothing,” Garner said.

For a period of time, Assemblyman Mike Gatto couldn’t open a newspaper without reading about a tragic hit-and-run collision.
Wanting to come up with a way to bring these drivers to justice, he proposed a “yellow alert” system that would allow local police to use digital freeway signs to ask drivers to help identify hit-and-run suspects.
Gov. Jerry Brown this week signed Assembly Bill 8 into law.
Starting in January, local law enforcement agencies will be able to tap into the state’s existing network of digital freeway signs to push out information — only when enough is available — about suspected hit-and-run vehicles and drivers when the collision results in a fatality or serious bodily injury.
The information would include more than a generic car description, such as a partial license plate number along with the make, model and color of the car, to alert drivers to be on the lookout for a fleeing vehicle.

STOCKTON — A Franklin High School student was struck and killed in a hit-and-run early Thursday, and the alleged driver surrendered to police eight hours later.
Antonio Araujo, 30, of Stockton, turned himself in to Tracy Police at about 2:41 p.m. and was taken into custody by California Highway Patrol, authorities said.
Araujo was driving a blue 2001 Chevy Blazer that allegedly struck 16-year old sophomore Michael Teixeira, who was skateboarding to school around 6:19 a.m. on South Walker Lane and Section Avenue in east Stockton, CHP Officer Victor Garrido said.

The Yellow Alert law went into effect on October 1st.

Smith, 36, was killed six months ago at the intersection of Sylvester Street and Road 36 by a driver who allegedly was fleeing police.

WORCESTER, Mass. (AP) – A second person is dead after a hit-and-run in Worcester.
Police say 46-year-old George Burdick died on Tuesday after he was placed on life support. His sister, 48-year-old Gina Burdick, of Worcester, died at the scene Saturday.
The driver, 29-year-old Daniel Depew, of Ayer, was arraigned Monday in Worcester District Court on charges including motor-vehicle homicide, drunken driving and leaving the scene of an accident.
