LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Police in Michigan have arrested the driver of a pickup truck who they believe intentionally struck a firefighter standing in a roadway collecting money for charity, killing him.
Dennis Rodeman, a seven-year veteran of the Lansing Fire Department, died Wednesday night, Mayor Virg Bernero said.
The 35-year-old Rodeman, who also served in the U.S. Marines in Iraq, according to the mayor, was struck about 3:40 p.m. He and other firefighters were participating in an annual fundraising campaign for the Muscular Dystrophy Association and the International Association of Fire Fighters, authorities said.
“This is a shocking and unthinkable tragedy. … Dennis was cut down in an instant, doing what he loved, what he believed in, what he believed in most: helping other people,” Bernero said at a press conference.
Rodeman was married two months ago, and he and his wife were expecting their first child, Fire Chief Randy Talifarro said.
A “traffic altercation” preceded Rodeman being hit, Lansing police Capt. Jim Kraus told the Lansing State Journal.

A judge on Thursday sentenced a Santa Fe woman to three years of probation for leaving the scene of a late-night accident on Cerrillos Road in which she had struck and killed a homeless man with her car.
State District Judge T. Glenn Ellington ordered Barbara Hanna, 48, who at the time of last year’s crash was an employee of an upscale Canyon Road restaurant, to serve 200 hours of community service over the next three years.
In an agreement with prosecutors, Hanna pleaded guilty to leaving the scene of the accident that caused the death of Lawrence Miera around midnight July 27, 2014. Hanna could have been incarcerated for six years, but Ellington suspended her sentence and ordered probation.

ISANTI, Minn. – The driver in a hit-and-run that killed a 15-year-old in Isanti has turned himself in and is fully cooperating with law enforcement, according to authorities on Friday. They also say the vehicle has been located.
According to the Isanti County Sheriff’s Office, 15-year-old Antonio DeMeules was skateboarding on 285th Ave. NE just east of Highway 65 on Thursday night when he was hit.

The accident happened when a St. Albans man was killed along Corridor G on Route 119 Thursday at around 12:30 a.m.
Carl Epling, 42, was the victim struck by a small silver vehicle, police said. The driver then took off.

GALLOWAY – Following a seven-month investigation of a hit and run accident, police arrested a Port Republic woman Thursday, Sept. 9.
Barbara Walk, 29, was charged with leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident with serious bodily injury, according to Public Information Officer Sgt. Pete Hone.
The accident occurred Feb. 7, when a 31-year-old Galloway man was struck and seriously injured while walking on South New York Road – Route 9 – and Ocean Avenue around 5:20 p.m.

Brown ran and tried to hop a fence but was unsuccessful, officers said. When another driver pulled up and saw Brown bleeding, the driver asked if he needed help, according to police. Brown hopped into the person’s car and pulled a gun, authorities said, demanding to be driven away from the crash scene.

TUCSON- A woman was killed after she and a child were hit by a car late Saturday night on the southside.
According to Tucson Police, the woman and the child were walking in the shoulder area on Nogales Highway near Elvira Road when a car hit both of them, then left the scene.
Marisa Robles, 38, was pronounced dead at the scene. The 11-year-old child suffered non-life threatening injuries and was taken to the hospital.
Investigators were able to put together a description of the suspected vehicle and responded to a home in the 10100 block of South Nogales Highway. They were able to located a vehicle matching the description with damage consistent with the crash.

A Lubbock TV reporter is accused of leaving a pedestrian seriously injured in a hit-and-run crash involving a station-owned vehicle Thursday evening in South Lubbock.
Patricia Janelle Cun Villacin, 23, was released from the Lubbock County Detention Center on Friday afternoon on $5,000 bond after police say a witness saw a KCBD-TV SUV hit a pedestrian about 6:30 p.m. Thursday in the crosswalk at South Loop 289 and Slide Road, said Lubbock police Lt. Ray Mendoza.
Villacin is a reporter for KCBD and, as of Friday afternoon, was still listed on the station’s website.
