Hit-And-Run America, Vol. DCCLXXXVIII

An ongoing collection of unsolved hit-and-run cases, with a focus on car/pedestrian incidents, from across the country since Jan. ‘010. If you know something about any of these incidents, or one that I’ve missed, do the right thing and call the police, even anonymously. After a respite from keeping the list, it restarted in January 2019, highlighting one case a day. If there’s a case you’ve seen that deserves highlighting, drop me a line at hickey@brianphickey.com.

10644. DES MOINES – A Des Moines woman smoked methamphetamine hours before intentionally hitting a 14-year-old central Iowa girl with her SUV this month, according to court documents. Nicole Poole Franklin, 42, told police she targeted her victim because the girl “is Mexican.” Clive Police Chief Michael Venema shared Franklin’s admission at a news conference Friday morning. She now faces an attempted murder charge and a number of other charges from a racially-charged incident that occurred 15 minutes later.

10651. Police on Tuesday arrested the hit-and-run driver they say ran over and killed professional wrestler Matt Travis as he biked into Harlem from the Bronx last month — but cops only charged the killer driver with minor counts rather than the far-more-serious crime of fleeing the scene of a crash.

10652. Bristol Township police charged Nicholas Napoli in a hit-and-run crash that killed a man in December 2017. A man who caused a standoff two years ago is now accused of fatally striking a man with his car and fleeing the scene in Bristol Township, according to authorities.

10661. Retired priest Paul Burak drove back to the Square Celt parking lot, where police officers were on scene, but did not tell anyone he had hit the women, Murphy said. Another St. Michael priest went to talk to Burak, who remained in his car, he said.
