Joseph Hatcher almost died when a driver who was high on PCP ran him down and nearly killed him on a Harrisburg street in January. Yet it was forgiveness, not vengeance, that motivated Hatcher when that driver, Geneia Rice, came before a Dauphin County judge this afternoon.
Hatcher didn’t ask for jail time and Judge Bernard L. Coates Jr., heeding his call, didn’t impose it. Instead, the judge sentenced Rice to 10 years of probation and, as Hatcher asked, gave her a chance to turn her life around.
“In my heart, I really care about this girl, even though I don’t know her,” Hatcher said after he limped to the front of the courtroom to speak to Coates. “I just want to see her get her life together.
“I know she didn’t mean to hurt me,” he said.
