Hit-and-Run America, Vol. CCVII

An ongoing collection of unsolved hit-and-run cases, with a focus on car/pedestrian incidents, from across the country since Jan. ‘010. If you know something about any of these incidents, or one that I’ve missed, do the right thing and call the police, even anonymously.

1598. Madison, Wisc. May 31. 23-year-old woman suffers severe injuries when struck by a Dodge Durango. According to the police report, the driver didn’t stop until a Roto-Rooter truck blocked her path. When she then realized the bicyclist was under the truck, she maneuvered around the truck, turned onto Odana Rd., hit a parked car and sped away.

1599. Jacksonville, Fla. June 1. 16-year-old girl suffers serious injuries after being struck by a white car, possibly a Chevy Impala, which fled the scene.

1600. Council Bluffs, Iowa. June 1. 51-year-old man injured when struck by a dark-colored SUV which fled the scene.

1601. Richlands, Va. June 3. 34-year-old man airlifted to hospital with serious injuries after being struck by a late 1990s or early 2000s model Kia which fled the scene.

1602-3. Bend, Ore. June 4. 24- and 21-year-old men struck and injured by a late ‘80s or early ‘90s Subaru which fled the scene.

1604. Worcester, Mass. June 3. 57-year-old man struck and killed by an unidentified vehicle which fled the scene.

1605. El Dorado, Ark. June 2. 40-year-old man struck and killed by an unidentified vehicle which fled the scene.

1606. Atlantic City. June 3. 30-year-old on bicycle struck and injured by a white Ford or Chevy which fled the scene.

1607. Pittsburgh, Pa. June 4. 8-year-old boy injured when struck by a black Jeep Grand Cherokee which fled the scene.

Gabrielle Nestande, a 23-year-old state legislative employee, was arrested last week and charged with failure to stop and render aid, a third-degree felony. Last week, a detective said that police had no reason to believe alcohol was involved in the crash, but today they announced alcohol is suspected in the collision.

And I quote (II) …

DENVER — In December of last year, Laurie Gorham was struck in a crosswalk by a hit-and-run driver. She was injured, but the crash killed her unborn child.
Police Officer Jay Estrada investigated the accident that night, and ten days later, according to an internal affairs complaint, another officer told police that Estrada ‘misled’ them about the investigation and did not take the necessary steps to follow up.

A fugitive is behind bars after police say he ran down and killed a Des Moines man in 2008.
Twenty five-year-old Feliciano Diaz was arrested Monday, south of Phoenix. Agents caught him trying to sneak into the United States, illegally from Mexico.
As police were booking him, they discovered Diaz was wanted in Des Moines. He allegedly killed 26-year-old Dennis Kaiser in a hit and run in September of 2008.

ALBUQUERQUE, NM (KRQE) – 20 year-old Memori Hardwick has now been charged with vehicular homicide and leaving the scene of an accident in the death of 36 year-old bicyclist Matt Trujillo.

Investigators are thanking the public for helping them find a vehicle they believe figured in a hit-and-run accident in which a bicyclist died last month.

HONOLULU — Big Island police have identified a 22-year-old Hilo man who was killed in a hit-and-run crash in Hilo over the weekend. Theodore Braxton was from Pennsylvania. He was a student at the University of Hawaii at Hilo. Braxton was a staff writer for the university’s newspaper, a member of the choir and was set to graduate next year, school officials said.
“He was a gentle personality. He was quiet, not aggressive. Yet, he did things that were extraordinary because he was into circus arts and tumbling and juggling, and in my class, he did commedia dell’arte, which is very physical and raucous. So it was a wonderful thing to see there was both sides to him,” UH Hilo instructor Jackie Johnson said.

RICHFIELD, Ohio — A Summit County Common Pleas judge sentenced a woman to 10 years in prison for causing the death of a woman whom she hit with her car.
Jennifer Jilek, 30, received seven years for failing to stop after the accident and three years for aggravated vehicular homicide, which carries a lifetime license suspension. She pled no contest last May to the aforementioned charges, as well as to a charge of DUI.
Jilek, of Richfield, struck and killed 37-year-old Charlene Kudza, and her dog, who she was walking with her boyfriend along Richlawn Road this past February.

And I quote (VIII) …

The man police say was the driver of a Porsche involved in the hit-and-run that killed two British tourists in front of their hotel in Fort Lauderdale Beach in 2009 avoided jail time after he pleaded guilty Friday to two counts of vehicular homicide.
Ryan Levin, 36, was sentenced to two years of house arrest and 10 years probation in Broward Circuit Court for leaving the scene of the February 2009 crash.

And I quote (IX) …

SAN DIEGO — A motorist who ran over a man walking on state Route 56 through Rancho Peñasquitos one foggy morning in October, was placed Friday on probation for three years and ordered to spend a year in county jail.
Nicoll Koval, 23, pleaded guilty in March to felony hit and run causing death, stemming from the incident that killed Albert Lee Holman, 34, of Mira Mesa. She had faced a possible sentence of up to four years in prison.

And I quote (X) …

LAS VEGAS — We are seeing more and more hit and run drivers on the roadways. “It’s unfortunate that people lack that respect and integrity that most people have, but it happens a lot,” said Trooper Jeremie Elliott.

A 26-year-old man accused of driving drunk and killing a wheelchair user in a hit-and-run crash near the victim’s Cathedral City home pleaded not guilty Thursday to felony charges.

INDIANAPOLIS — The victim of a tragic hit-and-run accident on New Year’s Day is speaking out after the man accused of hitting her was offered a plea bargain.
Police said Ed Karwatka struck Tabetha Lynn while she was refueling her car at 16th Street and Drexel Avenue after she ran out of gas.
