I genuinely love the fact that my post-game interview with MLK High Cougars Head Coach Ed Dunn, in the minutes after the Northwest Philly school won its first-ever Public League Championship, plays an emotionally integral role at the end of “We Could Be King.”
Here’s how I (with frozen fingers) quoted him in that story:
“Every day, something would come up that we’d have to address; something small, something big or in between. Things you don’t see coming,” he said, still drying off from the celebratory Gatorade-cooler shower.
“But it’s a journey, and the struggle, the challenges, are what makes what we accomplished today so rewarding,” Dunn continued. “Beyond football, these young men are learning life lessons that they can take with them forever.”
Looked more passionate on film, no? (My excuse for not using more: Quick turnaround for the post; I went — and this bothers me during professional-introspective moments — with the day-by-day coverage of the team instead of a long-form look at its big picture.)
