A Few Cool Stories I’ve Seen Recently

Hey folks, just getting back into the swing of things on this here site, so bear with me. Wanted to share a few stories that I’d filed away as being rather interesting. Take a look if you’re so inclined!

THE LONELIEST WHALE:

The whale that Joe George and Velma Ronquille heard was an anomaly: His sound patterns were recognizable as those of a blue whale, but his frequency was unheard of. It was absolutely unprecedented. So they paid attention. They kept tracking him for years, every migration season, as he made his way south from Alaska to Mexico. His path wasn’t unusual, only his song—and the fact that they never detected any other whales around him. He always seemed to be alone.

So this whale was calling out high, and he was calling out to no one—or at least, no one seemed to be answering. The acoustic technicians would come to call him 52 Blue.

CORRECTING THE RECORD:

There are a number of “facts” that you’ve probably repeated to other people that are actually incorrect. And because everyone loves a pedant, I’ve decided to share them with you here.

1, 2, 345, SIXERS, 10, 9, 8, 76ERS

Before Philly became an Eastern Conference powerhouse, it was a league punch line. Before the Sixers had All-Stars, they were a way station. Here’s the story of the Process, and what came after, from players who were there, like Dario Saric, Evan Turner, and Nerlens Noel.

THE STORY BEHIND THE GREATEST BEER ON EARTH

I was going back and forth to Italy at the time then and remember coming back and seeing Daisy Cutter bombers for the first time. I loved everything about the visual component. It was a very clean look when a lot of beer labels were ominous: creatures and killing, that kind of thing. Daisy Cutter had daisies in it. It was against the grain. The aroma was incredible. It was so intense for the time.

A VERY IMPORTANT HOW-TO LIFE HACK

Like summertime cocktails before it—think the Daiquiri and the Margarita—the Rum Runner sometimes manifests as a frozen slush drink. If that sounds good to you, get out the blender. But our preferred build is shaking all the ingredients and then serving them over ice, with a fun topper or two. (Umbrella garnishes!) Enjoy.
