Courier Post Runs A Story About My Impending Hit-And-Run Anniversary

Last year, when Maiken Scott asked about doing a piece for NewsWorks’ Pulse show regarding the traumatic brain injury I suffered in a 2008 hit-and-run, I’d sworn it was the last such story I’d do. Time to move on, went my thinking.

Well, this year, when Kevin Shelly — an old editor and friend from my AC Press days — asked about doing a piece for a Courier Post newspaper that I delivered as a preteen, his focus on my hit-and-run advocacy quickly convinced me to bend the rules a little bit.

So, here we are:

“On Dec. 20, Hickey was moved to Magee Rehabilitation Hospital in Philadelphia. It was around that time I saw him for the first time since the accident. I’d been one of his editors at The Press of Atlantic City when he was a young reporter, and we have remained friends.

“His movements then were hesitant, his speech halting and whispery. Hickey was normally a gregarious and voluble guy, so I had doubts he would return to a life of writing and chasing stories.

“So did he, though we’ve both been proven wrong.

“‘Oh, yeah, I flipped out,” Hickey noted. “I could not write. My right side was still paralyzed.

“‘I was really angry.'”
