“The right-to-life folks are seeing just how far they can push things,” said Joseph W. Dellapenna, a law professor at Villanova University and the author of “Dispelling the Myths of Abortion History.” Professor Dellapenna said it was “almost a certainty” that one of the laws would end up in front of the Supreme Court, where Justice Sonia Sotomayor’s views on abortion are untested, as are those of Elena Kagan, President Obama’s new court nominee.
“It could turn out they can push things a lot farther than people think,” he said. “Or, it could not.”

Since it went online, three and a half years ago, the site has published an extensive catalogue of secret material, ranging from the Standard Operating Procedures at Camp Delta, in Guantánamo Bay, and the “Climategate” e-mails from the University of East Anglia, in England, to the contents of Sarah Palin’s private Yahoo account. The catalogue is especially remarkable because WikiLeaks is not quite an organization; it is better described as a media insurgency.
By all accounts, the U.S. team’s current goalkeeper, Tim Howard, will be a linchpin in South Africa. Howard, who starts for Everton FC in the English Premier League, will be under enormous pressure in Rustenburg. Luckily for the Americans, he is in the prime of his career, and generally thought to be one of the best goalkeepers in the world. Howard has Tourette’s Syndrome, a disorder of the nervous system that manifests itself in facial jerks, spasms, and involuntary tics. It is not a factor on the field.
Taxing soda may encourage better nutrition and benefit our future selves. But so could taxing candy, ice cream and fried foods. Subsidizing broccoli, gym memberships and dental floss comes next. Taxing mindless television shows and subsidizing serious literature cannot be far behind.
On how we have nobody to blame but ourselves:
Viewers’ opinions, carefully observed and culled on the Web and pinpointed through more traditional market research, tend to dictate which Bravo stars graduate from ensemble reality shows to their own programs. The thinking is that they’ve already been vetted by the Bravo audience and the research team, and that they’ve already built brand awareness — so Bravo is, in marketing terms, just extending its product line.
