“You didn’t elect me to do what was easy. You elected me to do what’s right,” he said. “We need to fight their millions of dollars with our millions of voices. If everybody who fought so hard for change in 2008 show up in 2010, I’m confident we’ll win.”
Among the interesting side notes — besides The Roots performance beforehand — was a not-so-warm welcome for Mayor Michael Nutter when he took the introductory stage. I asked him about it afterwards.
When Mayor Michael Nutter spoke before the president, the reaction was mixed, with union-heavy boos drowning out the cheers. After the event, Nutter said he understood the frustration out there.
“These are very tough times for people on the ground. I understand that; I very much feel the pain of people in the city,” he said. “We’ve had to make some really difficult decisions, cutting services, layoffs, and that’s upsetting to people, rightfully so. But we’re making progress on jobs, on education, on many fronts. We’re working hard.”
