Emily Campbell didn’t want to remember the beating she suffered from a brazen robber. Yet there the 84-year-old was yesterday, talking about it after the man convicted of attacking her and eight others was sentenced to 63-to-126-years for his violent Northeast and Northwest Philadelphia spree.
“You can move on, but you can’t put something like this out of your memory,” Campbell said. “I wanted him to get punished but thought maybe he’d get out when he was 90. That’s why I spoke up.”
Christopher Russell, 35, assaulted eight women, and husband, between the ages of 46 to 83 in a six-month span ending March 2009. If the appeal he plans because he didn’t “get a fair trial” fails, he’ll serve what Judge Susan Schulman and assistant district attorney Caroline Keating consider “a life sentence.”
The consecutive sentence is 7-14 years for six cases, 9-18 years in the one where he shattered a woman’s teeth by slamming her head on the sidewalk and 12-24 years for the husband/wife case. Keating pushed for 123-to-246 years.
“He’s a coward, a violent predator who preyed on the vulnerable,” Kennedy said. “He wasn’t just happy with snatching a purse. His goal was to inflict pain.”
