Say what you will about Philly police in the wake of all those reports and whatnot, but they are good at publicly punishing their own of late. Take this release about officer Darryl Cathey that came over the transom late Saturday afternoon.
It’s a doozy.
PHILADELPHIA- On Saturday March 28, 2015 at approximately 12:10am, on-duty Philadelphia Police Officer Darryl Cathey, assigned to the 12th district was observed operating and parking a marked police vehicle which had three flat tires and bent rims at the location of 6500 Woodland Avenue. A 12th district supervisor was on location and observed this damage. As he began a conversation with Cathey, the supervisor observed his bloodshot eyes and he smelled an odor of alcohol on his breath; furthermore, Cathey indicated he did not know that he was operating his police vehicle on the rims with flattened tires. No other damages or injuries to any property or person have been reported at this time.
He. Did. Not. Know. His car was down to one working tire!
Based on those observations Cathey was being placed in custody when he began to struggle and assault a supervisor. After the brief struggle, Cathey was taken into custody and transported to the Police Administration Building to be processed.

The incident was immediately investigated by the Accident Investigation Division and The Internal Affairs Bureau. Cathey will be charged with driving under the influence, criminal mischief, aggravated assault, simple assault and recklessly endangering another person, for assaulting the supervisor.
This department takes these types of incidents seriously and behavior that doesn’t abide by the law, department policy and the highest level of integrity and service will not be tolerated.
Yes. Yes. This is one of those things that should be taken seriously.
Philadelphia Police Commissioner Charles H. Ramsey will suspend Cathey for thirty days with the intent to dismiss.
Cathey is 26 years old, and a 6 year veteran of the department, assigned to the 12th Police District.
