This is the type of hit-and-run story that warrants its own post. Four-year-old A.J. Newman was killed in a April 10, 2010 hit-and-run incident. It occurred after he, his mother and four-year-old sibling were struck while jaywalking.
The driver — a dirtbag named Jerry L. Guy — later “admitted hitting the child when pleading guilty to hit-and-run, served a six-month sentence. He was released in October and will serve the remainder of a five-year sentence on probation.” Newman’s mother Raquel faced three years after being convicted on three charges — homicide by vehicle in the second degree, crossing roadway elsewhere than at crosswalk and reckless conduct — related to the case.
What’s absurd isn’t that Raquel bears some culpability in the matter. She does. What’s absurd is that Guy only got six months for killing a kid and taking off from the scene. It’s a travesty of justice that this type of thing continues to happen, only spotlighted when something like a “mom faces more time than man who killed her son” story arises.
Guy’s a repeat offender. Guy should be put away for a decade. At least. Fact.
