Monday, in Clarke County Court, marked the first time Bowman and her family sat in the same room with the young man accused of hitting her and running.
Last winter, police say Bowman was struck by a red Mazda. The driver, 22-year-old William Wilson Heaton, allegedly fled the scene. Police found open bottles of alcoholic drinks in his truck.
Sixteen months later, came the first hearing. Bowman and her parents sat in the front row, Heaton several feet away.
Bowman has made great strides since surviving a three-week coma. But her recovery has been slow, and her parents say, on this day, Heaton didn’t look at them.

BRATTLEBORO — Marty Bugbee, a private investigator, walked up to the corner of Western Avenue and Union Street Friday and pointed to the spot where he said Eugene Narrett was killed.
Narrett, 64, was struck by a hit-and-run driver on the evening of Friday, Dec. 6, after attending an art opening of his work at Gallery in the Woods during Gallery Walk.
The driver who struck Narrett is still at large, and the Brattleboro Police Department continues to investigate the crime.
The police have not released much information about the case, but Bugbee said, according to a forensic pathologist, Narrett was walking east on Western Avenue when he was probably struck by a large truck or SUV that was traveling at a high rate of speed and turning down Union Hill from Western Avenue.
“There was probably damage to the grill, hood or side mirror,” Bugbee said as traffic moved along Western Avenue. “Whoever did this was probably familiar with the area.”

DANBURY — A city police officer killed by a hit-and-run driver as he rode his bicycle to work four years ago will be honored with other fallen officers and city firefighters under a City Council plan to knock down an unoccupied house on Main Street and create a memorial park.
The idea is not only to honor Officer Donald Hassiak and other public safety staff who died while in service to the city, but to give neighborhood families a green space for peace.
