6179. Greenville, SC. Jan. 18. Pedestrian injured when struck by a black Chevy Camaro which fled the scene.

6180. Concord, NH. Jan. 14. 16-year-old male on bicycle injured when struck by a red four-door Chevy which fled the scene.

HAUPPAUGE, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) — The families of four victims killed in hit-and-run crashes in Suffolk County called on Albany on Tuesday to enact tougher sentences for drivers who flee the scene.

A Bath woman turned herself in Monday afternoon as the driver who hit a 10-year-old girl walking to school Friday in Northampton, police said.

Amanda Miller, 21, surrendered only hours after police released a surveillance photo showing the car they believed was involved in the 8:30 a.m. accident at Main and Bridge streets, police said.

She continued, “I ran to her and was holding her hand and she looked at me and she was squeezing my hand and then she suddenly let go.”

A college student from Key Biscayne was arrested on drunk-driving and manslaughter charges after police say he struck two cyclists on Crandon Boulevard early Wednesday, killing one and seriously injuring the other before driving off.

Alejandro Alvarez, 21, a University of Maryland student who said he had been out all night at a Miami Beach club, turned himself in after having second thoughts about fleeing, Miami-Dade police said in an arrest affidavit released late Wednesday. Alvarez returned to the site of the collision some 20 minutes later and, while crying “hysterically,” admitted he had hit the cyclists, police said.

SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) — The daughter of a Vermont man killed by a hit-and-run driver outside a Savannah hotel asked Wednesday for the person responsible to come forward and assured that “forgiveness is still possible.”

Since 2010, 13 people have died and four were injured in 12 hit-and-run cases. Of those, five remain unsolved. Eight of the cases have involved pedestrians, and in most cases the pedestrian was in the wrong for not using a crosswalk.

“What people don’t understand is if it’s a pedestrian in the roadway they (the drivers) are not at fault, but when they leave it becomes a felony case,” Whitehead said.

The victim of a September hit and run on King Street has died months after being transferred to a long-term care facility where her family hoped she would recover from her injuries.

Sharline James was struck while crossing the intersection of King and Simons Streets on Sept. 19, Charleston Police said.

Randolph Brown, James’ uncle, said James died Thursday night.

Police found the car involved in the incident, a Dodge Challenger, a few days later, but no arrests were made. Police have not revealed how or where the vehicle was found, saying the release of that information would harm their investigation.

Samantha McLeod, 24, was booked at the Clark County Detention Center on a charge of felony hit and run in connection with a collision at 3:24 a.m. Sunday that left a man dead hours earlier.
