A University of Pittsburgh football player was arrested early Sunday and charged with hitting a pedestrian on the South Side and leaving the scene of the accident.
Jason Anthony Douglas, 19, is charged with causing an accident resulting in serious injury, aggravated assault, DUI and underage drinking. The incident occurred just before 2 a.m. at East Carson Street and 22nd Street, according to a Pittsburgh Police criminal complaint.
Officers were performing DUI checkpoints in the area when a witness told them he’d seen a silver Pontiac sedan with a missing front driver’s side headlight fleeing inbound on East Carson Street after striking a man later identified as Christopher Paul, no age available.
“Hey I play for Pitt football. … Please don’t arrest me,” Douglas told the officers, according to the affidavit.
Douglas’ eyes were also bloodshot and glassy.

A 25-year-old Mercyhurst College hockey coach was listed in critical condition at Hamot Medical Center after being injured while riding her bicycle in what police say was a hit-and-run crash by a drunken driver.
Kristen Cameron, of Prince Edward Island, Canada, was riding south on Route 19 in Summit Township Sunday when police said she was struck by Allen Peters, of Erie, just before 7 p.m.

A man with four prior drunken-driving convictions was arrested on the same charge Sunday after he crashed into a vehicle driven by a South Brunswick police officer heading to work, authorities said.
David Bennett, 43, was driving north on Fresh Ponds Road in South Brunswick at 1:40 p.m. when his Ford Taurus swerved into the southbound lanes and struck a vehicle driven by Officer Laszlo Nyitrai, police said.

Gallo’s defense attorney, Jacqueline Goodman, believes Adenhart’s fame has led to excessive publicity that could taint the jury. Judges have repeatedly denied her petitions to move the trial.
Goodman has also criticized the district attorney’s decision to charge the case as a murder, not a manslaughter, and believes it was motivated by Adenhart’s fame and the publicity surrounding the crash. Jurors will not have the option of finding Gallo guilty of the lesser charge.
“If Nick Adenhart hadn’t been in that car, then my client would not be charged with murder, he’d be charged with gross vehicular manslaughter,” Goodman said. “It’s not as if he’d be getting off lightly, but at least there’d be a light at the end of the tunnel.”
