Hit-and-Run America, Vol. CMLXXXIV

An ongoing collection of unsolved hit-and-run cases, with a focus on car/pedestrian incidents, from across the country since Jan. ‘010. If you know something about any of these incidents, or one that I’ve missed, do the right thing and call the police, even anonymously. After a respite from keeping the list, it restarted in January 2019, highlighting one case a day. If there’s a case you’ve seen that deserves highlighting, drop me a line at hickey@brianphickey.com.

14022. A Socorro Police Department officer’s mother was killed in a West El Paso hit-and-run crash, while the officer and his younger brother were severely injured, authorities said.

14023. “Everything slows down. It wasn’t long that I went from the collision to where I ended up on the side of the road,” Kepp recalled. “I remember realizing something was wrong with my right leg. When I came to final rest, I had some choice words for myself.”

14024. At roughly 12:45 am on Saturday, Dec. 16, a Meridian man was hit by another driver, who drove away from the scene. Meridian police said in a press release, they are currently looking for the truck.

14025. The accident isn’t an isolated trend in the Holy City: a report published in summer 2022 ranked Charleston as the fifth-most dangerous city for pedestrians in the country. There were 171 fatal pedestrian-auto collisions in South Carolina that year, and more than 7,500 pedestrians are estimated to have been killed nationwide in car crashes in 2022, according to data from the South Carolina Department of Public Safety and the Governors Highway Safety Association.

14026. “That is something that could’ve been avoided,” Beasley said. “It didn’t have to happen.”

14027.

14029. Hey remember when Kathryn Dennis allegedly ran down a woman in front of an elementary school? In a shocking coincidence, neither does the South Carolina Highway Patrol! The former star of Southern Charm has been keeping busy since being fired from the show, but she hasn’t been taking driving lessons. Back in October, a vehicle registered to Kathryn and a driver fitting her description hit a school resource officer. Law enforcement confirmed the car belonged to Kathryn and now they’re not confirming anything at all.

14031. The Rockville City Police Department released a photo of the man suspected of hurting multiple people after he hit them while driving an SUV on Dec. 14. 44-year-old Walter Marquez-Aviles is still on the run after he hit a 79-year-old woman and two men, sending them to the hospital with serious injuries.

14036. Prater’s son turned him in after he saw the car police said was involved in the incident in the driveway of Prater’s home. It was covered and usually isn’t, the documents state. He also overheard his father on the phone admit that he hit someone and left. Prater’s son watched security video and identified the person driving the car as his father.
