An ongoing collection of unsolved hit-and-run cases, with a focus on car/pedestrian incidents, from across the country since Jan. ‘010. If you know something about any of these incidents, or one that I’ve missed, do the right thing and call the police, even anonymously.

1408. Jacksonville, Fla. March 15. 56-year-old man struck and killed by a box truck that “didn’t slow down. He just kept going, and then he almost hit another car” but was later found.

1409. Chattanooga, Tenn. March 14. Man critically injured after being struck by a dark minivan which fled the scene.

1410. Bellmawr, NJ. March 5. 14-year-old boy injured after being struck by a red Honda Civic Sedan, not a hatchback, with a black hood and a chrome pipe, which took off.

1411. Henrico, Va. March 15. 23-year-old man struck and killed by an unidentified vehicle which fled the scene.

1412. Philadelphia. March 18. 4-year-old boy severely injured when struck by a silver town car with yellow writing on the side which fled the scene.

A police dog is credited with tracking a man who fled from officers and was involved in a hit-and-run accident, police said. Steven Katic, 31, of Valparaiso (Ind.), was arrested and charged with operating while intoxicated, leaving the scene of an accident and resisting law enforcement.

The death of a 22-year-old woman who was sideswiped by a vehicle in North Aurora last October should be ruled a homicide, a Kane County Coroner’s jury ruled Wednesday. Doreen Cardenas of Cicero died from head injuries and blunt trauma on the way to Aurora’s Mercy Medical Center on Oct. 25 after she and a friend were struck around 2 a.m. in the 0-99 block of Grant Street.
Lee Roy Patterson III, 30, of the 1000 block of Assell Avenue, Aurora, turned himself in later that day and is accused of two felony counts of leaving the scene of an accident, police said.

Readers reacted stridently to our news that Australian businessman Ryan Bowman will be jailed for just a year for last year’s hit-and-run killing of a 21-year-old woman on Sunset Boulevard. Bowman, distributor of the Girls Gone Wild videos, struck Lauren Ann Freeman as she stood in a crosswalk to hail a cab on Nov. 10. He fled in his Bentley without stopping.

GLOUCESTER (Va.) — The man accused of killing his longtime girlfriend by hitting her with a truck earlier this month told Gloucester police he had been drinking before the accident, which he said occurred while he was distracted lighting a cigarette, according to a search warrant.
Frank James West Jr., 34, is charged with felony hit-and-run, reckless driving and driving on a revoked license in the death of 34-year-old Megan Hogge, whose body was found in a ditch alongside Cooks Landing Road just before 9:30 p.m. March 2.

Chris Massey spends hours a day working to get some feeling back in his fingers and legs. Although doctors haven’t said he will never walk again, they haven’t said he will, either.
Massey of Huntington Beach is paralyzed from the chest down after being thrown from his Harley-Davidson when he was struck by a man suspected of drunken driving about 2 p.m. on Feb. 24 at Beach Boulevard near Slater Avenue.

A Merrill, Wisc. man accused in a February hit and run did not show up for court yesterday.
28 year old Lee Carlson was arrested and cited back on February 21st after he struck his wife with his pickup truck outside of the Marathon County Jail and then left the scene. Wausau police lieutenant Ben Bliven says Carlson was combative with officers when they caught up with him.
