Emily Bowman wrote her name. Well, sort of.

On Thursday, she drew a 3 instead of an E, but when she followed that with an M and I, her parents knew the woman who recently came out of a coma was trying to write her name.

“The therapist handed Emily a white board and a marker, but didn’t say anything and just told us, ‘Let’s see what she does,’” said Dale Bowman, the 19-year-old’s father.

“She wrote a 3 and a perfect M, then an I, and sort of a sloppy L and sort of a Y,” he said. “I was excited, and it shocked the therapist, who said, ‘Emily, you just took 10 steps forward.’”

Debbie Bowman burst into tears when she saw what her daughter wrote in her room at the Shepherd Center for patients with severe brain and spinal injuries in Atlanta.

“When she did the M after the 3, I was like, ‘Oh my God, she is getting ready to write her name,” Emily’s mother said.
