3360. Hickory, NC. Jan. 15. 56-year-old woman critically injured when struck by a 2012 Kia which fled the scene.
3361. Arlington, Texas. Jan. 14. 64-year-old man on scooter injured when struck by a metallic blue General Motors sedan, possibly a 2006 to 2010 Chevy Impala or something similar which fled the scene.

Drivers in Suffolk County are exploiting a legal loophole that lets them “get away” with serious crimes by fleeing the scenes of accidents, a trend that has become an “epidemic,” said Suffolk County District Attorney Thomas Spota.
At a press conference Wednesday, Mr. Spota urged state lawmakers to increase penalties for drivers who flee the scenes of serious accidents, citing the last month’s deadly hit-and-run accident in downtown Riverhead as a “perfect example” of how criminals are escaping harsher punishment.
“Drivers who flee and aren’t apprehended for days or weeks should not be treated more leniently than a driver who stays to perhaps render aid to another person,” Mr. Spota said. “Unfortunately, under the current law, this is exactly what’s happening today.”
AUSTIN — Gabrielle Nestande’s defense lawyer filed a motion to suppress evidence Friday afternoon. The former legislative aide is charged with the hit-and-run death of Courtney Griffin.
The Travis County District Attorney’s Office received new information in the case related to witnesses from the night of the crash.
Nestande’s lawyer also asked the state to hand over Austin police officers’ cellphone numbers. The judge denied that request.
The victim’s father, Bart Griffin, is working to push legislation this session that would increase the penalties for hit and run drivers.
A judge on Wednesday sentenced the driver who pleaded guilty in the hit-and-run crash that killed a cyclist on the Rickenbacker Causeway to 364 days in jail.
Judge William Thomas’ sentence for Michele Traverso also includes two years of supervision following his release.
Traverso’s sentence could have been as much as 35 years, and prosecutors had recommended 6 years in state prison and 5 years of probation.
The sentence that was handed down upset family members and supporters of cyclist Aaron Cohen, the 36-year-old cyclist who died from his injuries the day after the Feb. 15 crash.

The driver who hit and killed a motorcyclist two months ago in Thibodaux has been arrested, State Police said.
The driver was apprehended “through the investigation of State Police Troop C and the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office,” Troop C spokesman Evan Harrell said. “We have someone in custody, and he admitted to doing it.”
Arthur Meads, 132 Violet St., Thibodaux, was picked up Tuesday and confessed during questioning, Harrell said.

CLEVELAND — A cash reward of $7,000 is being offered in a hit-and-run accident that killed an elderly woman on the city’s west side last week, Cleveland police said.
Investigators say 81-year-old Maxine Lobins was struck by a dark-colored SUV on the morning of January 9, as she crossed Lorain Avenue, west of Rocky River Drive.

A Lancaster County woman accused in a hit-and-run crash that injured a 12-year-old girl was charged after her husband voluntarily turned over her minivan to police, according to charging documents.
Julie M. Mullin, 34, of East Petersburg, was charged this week with accidents involving death or personal injury, duty to give information and render aid, and immediate notice of accident to police.
The court documents indicate that Mullin became upset when her husband asked her about the damage to the front of her red Saturn minivan.

Brooksville Police officers arrested a Brooksville man accused of the Saturday morning hit and run that left a young mother of two dead.
Michael J. Thompson, 41, was arrested Thursday evening after a Florida Department of Law Enforcement report forensically matched small pieces of a headlight left at the hit and run site to Thompson’s vehicle, which was involved in a second accident shortly after the hit and run.
According to a police report, Trina Harvey’s body was found in the Cortez Boulevard and Horse Lake Road intersection in Brooksville at 5:11 a.m. Saturday morning. Harvey was on foot, and an autopsy determined she had been standing up when hit by a vehicle, between 2:30 a.m. and 3 a.m.

Police said they received a call at about 1:30 a.m. about a one-car crash. When officers arrived, they saw a woman in the road who had been struck.
The person who hit her did not call 911 or stop to help. The hit-and-run is now a criminal case.
The woman, who was later identified as 49-year-old Carrie Fitzgerald, was driving a Chevrolet pick-up when she lost control on the unlit two-lane undivided highway and rolled over, according to authorities.
Officials said the woman was laying in the roadway when she was hit by the hit-and-run driver. The medical examiner told police it may be difficult to determine if the woman was killed in the first crash or if she died after being run over.

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) – A man wanted on a $1 million warrant after fleeing overseas to avoid facing charges in a fatal hit-and-run in 2011 was arrested Wednesday at San Francisco International Airport, a Santa Clara police spokesman said.
Santa Clara police and U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents captured Ramiro Lozares, 44, at the airport after he returned from two years on the lam in the Philippines, police Lt. Kurt Clarke said.
Lozares, a Sunnyvale resident, was charged with felony hit-and-run in an accident in Santa Clara on Jan. 11, 2011, that claimed the life of John Kearney, 56, also of Sunnyvale, Clarke said.

Based on interviews and evidence gathered at the scene, Edgewater police arrested a 43-year-old New Smyrna Beach man Thursday and charged him with the hit-and-run death of 75-year-old Telvy M. Acosta of Edgewater.
Joseph L. Bompadre went to the police station on Park Avenue about 8:30 a.m. at the request of Edgewater authorities, Sgt. Joe Mahoney said. Upon completion of an interview, he was taken into custody, the arrest report said.

Teenager Ruby Martinez was walking along the side of the road when she was struck by a car.
It happened last week near Nebraska and San Joaquin.
The driver didn’t stop but later returned to the scene.
The family picked up flyers from 13 businesses where donation bins they didn’t even know about were placed.
People have been filling the donation bins thinking the money would go to the family to help them pay for Ruby’s funeral, but the family said they haven’t seen any money from these bins which the Martinez family has found in over a dozen businesses.

Jonathan Simmons, the Bristol Township driver who admitted striking John Rearick with his car as he walked along New Falls Road last year, killing the 23-year-old Levittown resident, was sentenced Tuesday to 15 to 30 months in a state prison.
Bucks County Judge Wallace Bateman in Doylestown said he exceeded the state mandatory minimum of one year for Simmons’ crime because the 27-year-old man was driving even though his license was suspended.
“You had no business driving a car. We all know you shouldn’t have been on the road that day,” the judge told Simmons.
