I don’t mean to brag, boast or claim I’m intercontinental when I eat french toast or anything, but I’ve won my fair share of journalism awards over the course of my career.
It’s nice to be recognized for the stories that found their way to one’s notebook, yet I never really actively pursue that sort of validation. It’s tacky to gear one’s career toward winning awards; gets to the point where ethics can be bent involving, say, stories about illicit leaks in Pennsylvania.
But I digress: Thanks to work I did at Philly Voice and NewsWorks since January, I’m up for Philebrity’s Philly Writer of the Year Award this week. This one is pretty cool because it’s not peers, but readers and civic-minded observers weighing in.
Granted, I’ve worked at City Paper, with Duane Swierczynski (at CP, ironically), and under the WHYY umbrella with the folks at PlanPhilly. They’re all good, particularly likely-winner City Paper, what with the tragedy of being shut down a month or so back. Current standings:
