The Baltimore Police Department confirmed Monday that it’s building a criminal case against Bishop Heather Cook, 58, the second-highest ranking official of the Episcopal Church of Maryland, after she crashed into a married father of two as he cycled along a local roadway then fled the scene as he lay dying two Saturdays ago.
Clergy from the church are expected to meet about Cook’s troubles on Tuesday, but say her fate is now out of their hands as police suggested the case could be headed for a trial.

A bill introduced in the California Legislature would allow law enforcement agencies to use the state’s emergency alert system — typically used as Amber Alerts for child-abduction cases — in instances of hit-and-run crashes that result in serious injuries or fatalities.
Assemblyman Mike Gatto, D-Glendale (Los Angeles County), introduced the same bill this month for the second consecutive year despite the fact that his previous attempt was vetoed by Gov. Jerry Brown in September. Brown voiced concerns about overloading the emergency system, which recently expanded to include alerts for missing people who are developmentally disabled.
“This expansion should be tested before adding more categories of individuals that could overload the system,” Brown wrote in his veto message.

NORMAL — A Normal man was not wearing a helmet, but did have lights on the front and back of his bicycle and, as far as police know, was obeying all bicycle traffic rules when he was struck by a motorist late Wednesday afternoon.

SANTA CRUZ >> A New Year’s Day pedestrian hit-and-run in Newport Beach that killed UC Santa Cruz 2014 alum Travis Marton has brought together the campus community with a candlelight vigil and crowdfunding campaign.
Marton, 23, was found lying on East Coast Highway at around 3 a.m. Thursday after being hit by a vehicle. Newport Beach police and fire personnel who responded to the call declared his death at the scene.

A man who tweeted that he had knocked over a cyclist but could not stop because he was “late for work” has been sacked from his job at a stockbrokers.
Cardiff University graduate Rayhan Qadar later told the BBC the message was a “dumb mistake” and he “did not hit anyone”.
But his employer Hargreaves Lansdown said the tweet was “unacceptable” and confirmed his dismissal.
Avon and Somerset Police earlier appealed for any victim to call them.

CARLISLE — The Camp Hill woman who was involved in a Jan. 28, 2014, pedestrian hit-and-run where she said she was looking at a text message on her cellphone was sentenced to 2 weeks in county prison.
Shannon Perlman, 29, received the mandatory 3- to 23-month minimum for the hit-and-run, but will only serve 14 days in Cumberland County Prison. She is eligible for work release and will remain on probation and house arrest for the remainder of the sentence, but Judge M.L. Ebert said he will reconsider the sentence after six months.
“This is probably one of the difficult cases presented to the court today,” Ebert said. “But for the grace of God he could have been killed and then you’d be looking at homicide by vehicle.”
