… if there was a pocket of ignorance that thought “soccer” was the land of ladylads whose overprotective mammies steered them away from American football and rugby (ignorance the key word here, because futbol is a majestic art form of what the human body is capable), the unnecessarily stripped-down photos from this month’s Vanity Fair won’t make them see the light. Ok, fine, maybe the ladies will unquestionably dig it, but all it does is make me want to do 2,000 sit-ups a day.

The upshot? The Leibovitz-photo-shoot accompanying text by A.A. Gill may damn well be the best think piece I’ve read on futbol’s global import. Here’s a scanned portion about pitch-grudges against Germany.
