10-year-old Philadelphia boy critically injured while riding this bike
915. Kihei, Maui. Sept. 26. A 26- and 22-year-old man were hospitalized, one in critical, after being struck by a pick-up truck that didn’t stop.
916. Ramapo, NJ. Sept. 25. 31-year-old man suffers minor injuries when struck by a grey-colored vehicle that fled the scene.
917. West Laredo, Texas. Sept. 24. Man in his 20s suffered fatal head injuries and two other men hospitalized after being struck by a red-or-maroon car which fled the scene.
918. Philadelphia. Sept. 26. 10-year-old boy on a bike (pictured) critically injured after being hit by a black Dodge Charger that didn’t remain at the scene.
919. Crownsville, Maryland. Sept. 25. 16-year-old boy on a bike injured when struck by a maroon GMC Sahara which fled the scene.
920. Texarkana, Texas. Sept. 26. A 40-year-old man who’d run out of gas and was walking to get assistance hospitalized after being struck by a 2007 or newer GM Chevrolet pick-up truck which fled the scene.
921. Bessemer, Ala. Sept. 27. 10-year-old boy killed after being struck by a car, the driver of which left a kid to die in the street but then turned herself in later.
922. Heath, Ohio. Sept. 26. 12-year-old child hospitalized after being struck by a small, black regular cab, fleet side truck with thin pinstripes down that took off.
923. San Antonio, Texas. Sept. 26. A 15-, 18- and 48-year-old were injured when a compact car swerved off the road, hit them and took off.
924. Madera, Cal. Sept. 26. 69-year-old man struck and killed by a white car, possibly a two–door model, which didn’t stop to help.
925. Grand Forks, ND. Sept. 27. 54-year-old woman suffers minor injuries after being struck, on the sidewalk, by a red SUV leaving a parking lot.
926. Plattsburgh Town, NY. Sept. 28. Bicyclist killed when struck by a tractor-trailer which fled but was later found.
927. Las Vegas. Sept. 28. 45-year-old man rushed to the hospital after being struck by a beige pickup truck which fled the scene.
928. Silver Spring, Md. Sept. 25. 22-year-old woman comatose after getting struck by a 1994-98 GMC Jimmy, Chevy S-10 pick-up truck, Chevy Blazer, or Oldsmobile Bravada which fled the scene.
929. Chicago. Sept. 27. 21-year-old woman critically injured when, while crossing the street, she was struck by a 4-door Audi A6 which took off.

Shortly after the St. Petersburg Times announced Mr. Smith’s death on its website, a reader posted a comment stating the following: A man who is working as a dishwasher at the Crab Shack at the age of 48 is surely better off dead.
Web editors removed the comment, deeming it an offensive and insensitive insult to a dead man’s friends and family. Though hardly unusual — check out the comments beneath stories about any recent tragedy — this one spurred the Times to make Mr. Smith the subject of this story, as a reminder that every life matters.
This much is certain about Mr. Smith: A number of people miss him.
