And I quote (from a statement he just released) …
Tonight President Obama laid out very clearly and powerfully the consequences of failing to raise the debt ceiling and deal with our deficit in a long-term, balanced manner. The fact that we have reached a point where the President of the United States needs to make such a statement is simply stunning.
The behavior of some in Washington D.C. – recklessly bringing this country to the brink of default in service of short-term political gain – is the height of irresponsibility and a failure of their duty to serve and protect the American people.
Equally irresponsible is an approach to cutting our deficit which forces the poorest Americans to suffer and pay more while protecting millionaires, billionaires and special interests.
Much damage has already been done by this protracted failure to act in Washington D.C as the American people – and the rest of the world – look on in disbelief.
Too many Americans are out of work, our country’s infrastructure needs investment, and cities and states across the United States continue to work hard to balance their budgets and still provide services to our citizens.
It’s time for Congress to act now, reach a compromise with President Obama, and remember just who they are there to serve – the American people.
