Hit-and-Run America, Vol. CXLIII

If you know something about any of these incidents, or one that I’ve missed, do the right thing and call the police, even anonymously.

1011. Oshkosh, Wisc. Oct. 21. Convenience-store manager who confronted a driver who was apparently going to drive off without paying for a gasoline purchase hospitalized with head injuries after being struck by a black car, possibly an Oldsmobile, that may have been manufactured from 1999 to 2002.

1012. McAllen, Texas. Oct. 21. Unknown pedestrian struck and killed by a dark-colored vehicle which fled the scene.

1013. Bloomington, MN. Oct. 21. 85-year-old woman walking home after visiting her husband in a nearby care facility struck and killed by a 1999-2002 Chevrolet Silverado, possibly black, navy blue or dark green, that sustained front-end damage on the driver’s side front headlight and trim area. Pieces of the truck were found at the scene.

1014. Desert Hot Springs, Cal. Oct 20. 49-year-old man struck and killed by a dark blue or purple 1989 Ford SUV (possible an Explorer or Expedition) which fled the scene.

1015. New Haven, Mich. Oct. 19. 74-year-old woman struck and injured by a dark-colored Ford Explorer that took off from a gas station but was caught on tape. Said the victim (video near bottom of post), “My body is gonna suffer from this for the rest of my life, ’cause this kind of injury just doesn’t go away. It’s with (me) now.”

1016. Miami. Oct. 23. 26-year-old man struck and killed by a silver Lexus or Infiniti, the driver of which briefly stopped at the shoulder of the roadway and then fled the scene.

1017. Charleston, SC. Oct. 21. Woman on bike struck by a van, possibly a Ford Econoline, which took off.

1018. Amelia, La. Oct. 18. 29-year-old man struck and killed by a gold or pewter 1999 to 2002 Chevrolet Tahoe or GMC Yukon which left the scene.

1019. LaPlace, La. Oct. 23. 59-year-old man killed when he was struck by a dark-colored SUV, and thrown into the opposite lane, where he was struck by a Nissan Altima and a Hyundai Elantra.

1020. Juneau, Alaska. Oct. 21. 13-year-old boy shaken up when, while crossing a marked crosswalk with his bicycle, the rear tire was struck by a yellow pickup with a black stripe along the tailgate, but continued driving.

1021. Wixom, Mich. Oct. 23. Unidentified person walking on the shoulder of a highway killed when struck by a vehicle for which witnesses got license-plate information while it was fleeing.

Almost two months after he was struck by a car while riding his bicycle home from work, John Smalls is slowly getting better. He’s living with a sister since leaving the hospital, exercising by walking and regaining his memory.
He’s angry, though, that the driver who hit him and left him for dead is still out there.

Henson said the victim’s body has been confiscated since the police is yet to determine if the victim died due to a hit and run accident or if this is another homicide.

And I quote (II) …

The fatal hit and run accident signifies the worst that can happen on Rio Grande Valley roadways, where area cyclists say they often fear aggressive motorists unaware of their presence.
In 2009, there were 89 collisions between bicyclists and motor vehicles in the Valley, according to the Texas Department of Transportation. Four cyclists died in those wrecks.

A Lake Forest motorist (pictured) had a blood alcohol content four times the legal limit when he crashed an Audi and fled the scene on foot through the Rock and Roll McDonald’s parking lot Tuesday night on the Near North Side, police said.

And I quote (IV) …

A woman sought for a strange hit-and-run incident on the west side Wednesday night is being sought for a strong-arm robbery and hit-and-run at an east side supermarket early Thursday morning, Madison police reported.
The woman allegedly snatched the purse of a 71-year-old woman in the parking lot of Woodman’s Food Market East, 3817 Milwaukee St., at about 4:50 a.m. Thursday, police said.
The suspect in the strong arm robbery drove a Cadillac Escalade SUV, the same vehicle allegedly stolen by the suspect from her father at a Monroe Street parking ramp about nine hours earlier.

And I quote (V) …

A Rochester police officer was punched in the head while trying to arrest a man wanted for a hit-and-run crash.
Two officers were talking with the man when they say he became beligerent. He reportedly threatened to bite the officers and said he had HIV. There was a scuffle in the living room, then the man ran upstairs, climbed out of a second floor window onto the roof of a porch. He then jumped off the roof and landed on the ground where he was arrested.

And I quote (VI) …

“We’ve been making flyers, posting them up. I’ve been putting it out on Facebook, having my friends tag it so that other people could look at it. You know, and that’s all I’ve been. It’s consuming my mind. That’s all I’m thinking about,” said the victim’s daughter, Cristina Aponte. “I’m just hoping that somebody comes forward with any, with the tiniest bit of information, and can help us out, just to get some closure. Cause my father didn’t deserve this. At all.”

And I quote (VII) …

A 27-year-old Madison woman sought in a bizarre hit-and-run crash that injured her father has been arrested by Madison police. Petty allegedly stole her father’s Cadillac Escalade SUV in a parking ramp on Monroe Street Wednesday night, smashed into two vehicles while exiting the ramp, and struck her 52-year-old father who had jumped onto the SUV’s running board.

And I quote (VIII) …

Kyle Patrick Leonard, 21, 35W511 Sunnyside Drive was charged with a hit and run after hitting the drive-thru window at Wendy’s. Leonard still ordered food but would only give the name “Joseph” to the person at the window. Police found out the truck that hit the window was a company truck.

And I quote (IX) …

Paul Lawrence Miller said he left the scene of a fatal accident he is accused of causing last month because he was in a state of shock, a witness testified yesterday.

And I quote (X) …

To hit and run is just about universally reviled as a shabby, cowardly offence.

Grayson Dawson should be celebrating her 49th birthday today.
She won’t. Instead, she will be thinking about David Sherman, the Summerfield bicyclist she struck and killed a year ago today when she fell asleep at the wheel of her SUV.
“I’d have given anything that it could have been me and not him, because I took him away from his wife and his children and friends,” Dawson said last week from her home. It marks the first time she has spoken publicly about the accident. …
“I think I deserve to be hung,” Dawson whispered, looking down at the ground. “I took a life and I know it was an accident, but it still happened.”
