I just got off the phone with George Monroig. We were talking about his brother Omar, aka “The Gentle Giant,” who was killed while crossing a North Bergen, NJ street on March 23.
The details are painful to even read. Omar was with friends celebrating his birthday, which had just passed two days before. He was walking a few steps behind when a dark-colored 2001-2004 Toyota Camry struck and carried him more than 100 feet.
The scumbag driver took off. The Gentle Giant fought to live but died eight days later. Here is what Omar’s friend Arnaldo Arroyo told the Hudson Reporter:
“I ran over to him and again my concern was for no one else to hit him, hurt him or harm him,” he said. He stayed by Monroig’s side, risking his own life to make sure that “another car didn’t finish him off. Never in my wildest nightmare would I think that somebody wouldn’t stop.”
That’s the kind of experience than one can never shake. So too is not knowing, more than three months later, who killed Omar, George said.
He also told me he wished I could have met his brother. I do too.
That’s not possible now, because of a hit-and-run dirtbag who killed a man in the street and took off toward a harbor of self-preservation.
To that end, please, if you’re from North Jersey or NY, take a look at the mugshot. If you know people in North Jersey or NY, send this link along to them. There’s a $10K reward for information.
This asshole, who seems eminently identifiable, does not belong on the streets.
RIP, Omar.
