In rehab circles, “miracle Mondays” is a familiar phrase for the progress that patients often see after having a weekend to improve.
For Kylie Doniak, her therapists at a Los Angeles-area rehabilitation center call her ongoing progress “miracle every days.”
The former University of Texas soccer player still faces a challenging road to recovery but has made great strides since she was left in a coma and paralyzed in a downtown Austin hit-and-run crash in February. She is now walking, talking and recognizing family and friends.
“Every day there are huge changes,” her mother, Lori Doniak, said recently by telephone.
Today, the 21-year-old undergoes daily, outpatient medical treatment near her native Chino Hills, Calif.-home, where she lives with her parents and two sisters. The family hosts a constant stream of relatives and friends from California and Texas checking on Doniak, who struggles to regain her short-term memory and reduce the physical pain that remains.
“She is tough. She is doing her best to get through this,” Lori Doniak said. “She is a fighter. She is going to do fine, and it is just going to take time.”

An Englewood police officer had used a fully-marked police car to pull over a gray Ford Mustang. The officer and Montoya were outside of their vehicles when a white Nissan SUV sideswiped the police car and then struck the officer and Montoya. The Nissan continued to drive south on Broadway.
Littleton police officers arrested the hit-and-run driver several miles away from the accident.

Police looking for the driver who fled after striking a motorcyclist in Lancaster County, Pa. have released a surveillance photograph of the woman.
Manheim Township police said the woman was driving a silver sedan, possibly a Honda or Toyota, when she struck the motorcyclist while she was leaving a parking lot in the 1200 block of Lititz Pike the night of May 24.

One victim, Shannon Parker, is still in the hospital, while Adrienne Spates, the woman who police say hit her and then left, is at home. Shannon Parker has a long recovery ahead.
Police say 28-year-old Adrienne Spates ran into Parker and another woman on Cooper near Oliver, then drove off. Parker talked to us by phone, “Honestly I think they probably thought I was dead.”

The family of a Honolulu man killed by a hit-and-run driver is pleading for the driver to surrender to authorities.
38-year-old Ricky Donre of Honolulu died Saturday at Queen’s Medical Center after being transported in extremely critical condition with severe head injuries after he was struck Wednesday night in Moiliili.
Investigators said the vehicle they are looking for, a light-colored Nissan sedan, was traveling south on Isenberg Street at a high rate of speed when it made a left turn into the moped driven by Donre.
“We do have some witnesses who gave us a partial license,” said Lt. Robert Towne of the Honolulu Police Department. “What we would do is ask for witnesses who may find this vehicle which would have damage to the front end.”

Nancy Schoeffler, 63, was killed at about 11:20 p.m. on March 31 after being struck near the 2800 block of West Burnside where the street climbs into the West Hills area.
Police said they arrested Angela Dawn Kaps-Collins, 43, on Monday in Beaverton and recovered the car they believe is involved in the incident. In a press release, police said tips from the public to Crime Stoppers assisted in the investigation.

Alvarado struck Officer Frank Vrtochnick with his car on Christmas night 2011 near 17th and Windlake Ave on Milwaukee’s south side.

Daniel rode his scooter down the street to a local store. But when he headed home, with his little sister Graciela just behind him, the unthinkable happened. Graciela says, “Daniel saw the guy so he turned to the curb, but then the guy hit him from behind.” Daniel says, “I remember seeing the car and I tried to get out of the way, but that’s all I can remember.”
Graciela remembers it vividly. She says, “He got up on the car and then he was on the windshield and he rolled off to the side.” She says the man who hit Daniel never stopped. Graciela says, “At first I freaked out, but then I dropped my bike and I just got him up. It took me about a minute to get him up because he was unconscious for a little while.”
