Rooney’s 58-Yard Goal Was Nice, But Tettey’s Volley (And Mine, By Proxy) Was Better

Much was made this weekend about Wayne Rooney’s quirky goal taken a few steps in from midfield.

But to my eye, Alex Tettey’s volley for Norwich (vs. Sunderland) shames it.

What it also does is remind me of a goal I scored in the South Jersey group semis back in 1990. Humblebrag.

Whatever. Mine was amazing, too. Even if you wouldn’t know it from the above account of that heartbreaking loss from the Courier Post. Real talk: If I scored that goal today (crossed to me about 25 yards out, chest trap, full volley, nothing but goal net), it’d be Vined and RTd about until the name Brian Hickey became synonymous with “fluky soccer other-worldliness.”

Alas, the only version we have of said goal comes from me, my Haddon Township Hawks teammates and my victims who ended up winning that day anyway.

So watching Tettey’s will have to do.
