Some crimes will always go unsolved, but it is disturbing that this county has had five unsolved fatal hit-and-runs within the last five years. Three of them were in the north county district of state Sen. Bryan Simonaire. He has an idea for doing something about this problem, and it’s worth discussion.

Simonaire wants to build on the success of the AMBER Alerts, which spread information on endangered children, and the Silver Alerts, which do the same for missing, frail seniors. Under both programs, information released by the state police pops up on smartphones and is speedily posted on the Internet and electronic highway billboards. Simonaire’s idea: a Yellow Alert system for hit-and-runs.

A bill to set up such a system sailed through both houses of the California legislature last year, only to be vetoed by Gov. Jerry Brown. He explained that since California’s AMBER Alert system had just been expanded to send out information on lost or missing seniors and the disabled, he wanted to make sure it could handle those responsibilities before piling on new ones. The legislation’s sponsor — a Democrat from Los Angeles — is now trying again.
