Police officers in Clackamas County have set up a fund for a young mom lost her leg in a hit-and-run crash over the summer. Now, she’s sharing her story for the first time.
It’s been a tough few months for 25-year-old Kelsey Zionskowski. But, she believes she has a lot to be grateful for this Thanksgiving.
She was hit by a minivan near her home in Milwaukie on August 5, 2014. Her legs were pinned between the van and a light pole, nearly severing both of them.
“I saw the car that was coming towards me and I didn’t have time to react or anything…I’ve come such a long way since the hospital,” Zionskowski said.

“Part of the reason I was really nervous about posting it in the first place was like a ‘who cares’ kind of a thing, and I’ve been proved so wrong,” Grant said of the GoFundMe page, which has raised $6,825 so far. “It has meant the world to me that people care so much. It’s really why I love the Appleton community and my community at home.”

An Indiana County district judge on paid leave was admitted into a probation program Monday for alleged involvement in a hit-and-run crash.
Judge Jennifer J. Rega, 41, will spend one year in the Accelerated Rehabilitative Disposition program and perform 24 hours of community service, according to an order signed by President Judge William Martin. Entry into the program is not an admission of guilt.
Rega and her attorney, Robert Muir, declined to comment after a private session was held on the case in the county Probation Office. There was no hearing in open court that members of the public could attend.

LAS VEGAS — The laws could get tougher for hit-and-run drivers if one state senator has his way. He plans to introduce a bill to increase penalties for those who leave the scene of an crash.
State Senator Mark Manendo believes many of the drivers flee because they are drunk and want to escape the stiffer DUI penalties.
The way state law is currently written, a driver could get fewer penalties if they are caught the next day — after sobering up — than if they are caught at scene of a crash while drunk.
