Hit-and-Run America, Vol. DCCXCVI

An ongoing collection of unsolved hit-and-run cases, with a focus on car/pedestrian incidents, from across the country since Jan. ‘010. If you know something about any of these incidents, or one that I’ve missed, do the right thing and call the police, even anonymously. After a respite from keeping the list, it restarted in January 2019, highlighting one case a day. If there’s a case you’ve seen that deserves highlighting, drop me a line at hickey@brianphickey.com.

10804. POTTAWATTAMIE COUNTY, Iowa — A retired Council Bluffs police officer pleaded guilty in the hit-and-run death of a cyclist. A judge immediately sentenced Bob Christensen to two years probation.

10805. MIDDLETOWN TOWNSHIP, Pa. (CBS) — Police have identified the woman killed in a hit-and-run on a Bucks County highway early Monday morning. Middletown Township police say 29-year-old Alexandra Ridgway was either walking on or crossing Route 1 in Middletown Township when she was struck by several vehicles.

10806. “We remember Sandra for the kind and caring woman she was. The one who made sure no one was left behind,” wrote Shelly Sarasin, the co-founder of Street Angels Milwaukee Outreach.

10807. “We were about to call it a night and I had just stepped inside the house. That’s when one of my little cousins comes yelling, screaming that my little baby brother had just gotten run over,” Christian Rivas told the station. “They tried to save his life, but unfortunately it didn’t work out that way.”

10808. PENNSAUKEN, N.J. (CBS) – Police in Pennsauken are searching for a driver wanted in a fatal hit-and-run. Police say a pedestrian was struck and killed at the intersection of North Route 130 and Terrace Avenue, just before 1:30 a.m. Friday.

10809. Closure might someday allow Sherrer to take down the memorial. For now, it stands as a reminder to whoever hit Jailei, the impact of that moment will last a lifetime. “I don’t want nobody to forget about her, I don’t think anybody ever will,” said Sherrer. Jailei’s family and the police department are begging anyone with information to come forward. Police say they will investigate every single tip, no matter how small.

10810. “He struck her and left her there,” Veal told the I-TEAM.  “He didn’t even bother to call 911, he just left her.”

10811. “I was working on my pool and then I heard a thump, like a crash, and then right after that I heard someone screaming,” said Gene Forsythe, a witness who heard the crash from his backyard and then went to the scene. “It is horrible hearing that it was a child involved. It is really, it is devastating. My heart is just, I am emotional myself.”

10813. “They ran her down like a dog on the street and continued to go about their business like nothing happened,” said a family member of the victim.

10814. “They just left my child on the ground. Just hit him and left. Didn’t check to see if he was OK, didn’t call the police, nothing,” Fizer said.

10815. “Stop hiding. You killed my mother and left her in the cold street to die,” said Berrios’ son Christopher Berrios.

10816. A Marietta woman was indicted last week on a felony hit-and-run charge after being accused of causing a 14-year-old boy’s death last year, court records show.

10817. The arrest reflects the challenging and tedious work that goes into solving hit-and-run collisions. Many leave few clues to go on, and families can wait for long periods of time while officers work to identify the suspects. The crashes often occur late at night with no witnesses, and video footage showing a car flash by may be too grainy to decipher a license plate.

10818. “Everything stood still for a second, like I just lost it,” he said. “My whole world shattered.”

10819. “Tokarra was… man, she was loving, she was kind. She was loved. She wasn’t a piece of trash,” said Tonyieka Cole, the victim’s cousin.
