Hit-and-Run America, Vol. DCCCXXXVIII

An ongoing collection of unsolved hit-and-run cases, with a focus on car/pedestrian incidents, from across the country since Jan. ‘010. If you know something about any of these incidents, or one that I’ve missed, do the right thing and call the police, even anonymously. After a respite from keeping the list, it restarted in January 2019, highlighting one case a day. If there’s a case you’ve seen that deserves highlighting, drop me a line at hickey@brianphickey.com.

11709. “It’s not humane, it’s not humane. How do you hit somebody and leave, and like a second car? There has to be some humanity, some justice brought to this,” daughter-in-law Elizabeth Liriano said. “This is not like a dog, this is a human being. Why would someone do that?”

11710. “It sounded like it hit a car, that’s how hard the impact was,” recalled Carol Green who witnessed the crash. “Everybody was trying to help the little boy and the mother because she was hysterical.”

11711. According to police, 23-year-old Maria Rodriguez is the driver they said hit and killed a 17-year-old in Southwest Miami-Dade and did not stop.

11712. “We really don’t know who took her life and we know that she died a hero, helping somebody that had wrecked,” said Shelley Collins, a close friend

11713. Police have made an arrest two years after a deadly hit-and-run in Fort Lauderdale.

11714. Memphis police hope the public can help find the person responsible for a hit and run that killed a man in a wheelchair. Officers responded to a fatal hit-and-run crash on Pendleton Street north of Lola Avenue around 7:30 p.m. September 18.

11715. Denton police say a 25-year-old woman was intoxicated and dressed as a police officer when she hit a parked vehicle and a man without stopping Saturday morning, sending the man to the hospital with a broken leg.

11716. “We were told that the nerves were damaged so severely that it couldn’t be reattached,” said Zucker, who added that her daughter’s fiancée waited at the scene with her for half an hour before an ambulance arrived and took her to Penn Presbyterian. She’s been at the hospital and in rehab ever since. “She will not be the same. Hopefully, she will have a new life.”

11717. A North Philadelphia man was arrested Sunday and charged with murder and related crimes for the recent hit-and-run death of an 8-year-old boy who was fatally struck by a stolen, speeding car, police said.

11718. At least six people were struck by a hit-and-run driver at the end of a Halloween party in Long Beach early Sunday morning, police said. A crowd of partygoers was standing outside a home in the 1300 block of Orange Avenue around 2:45 a.m. when the driver of a blue sedan plowed into the crowd, said Allison Gallagher, public information officer for the Long Beach Police Department.

11719. The woman was found lying in the street, and was pronounced dead at the scene, the Police Department said in a news release.

11720. A young boy and his mother were crossing Fairview Avenue, a busy commercial thoroughfare outside Hudson, on Sunday night at about 6:46 p.m. when the boy was hit by a dark-colored SUV, according to the sheriff’s office.

11721. “This is very tragic,” said Stephanie Hernandez, who lives in area. “This is very sad. Cars drive here without control, very fast, speeding.”

11722. The 61-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene, according to police. Her identity was not immediately released.

11723. “We have a 3 1/2-year-old daughter that she left that will never see her mom again,” said Stephanie’s father Richard Cheshire. “You know just, killing her like that and leaving her laying in the road, I just can’t imagine how anybody could do that.”

11724. Earlier this month, a husband and wife were killed when a pickup truck collided with their horse and buggy in Cumberland County, Virginia. Their eight children – whose ages range from 9-months-old to 16-years-old – were in the buggy at the time of the crash and survived. The horse in that crash had to be euthanized due to the extent of its injuries. Investigators say charged in this case are still pending.
