Hit-and-Run America, Vol. DCCCLXXVII

An ongoing collection of unsolved hit-and-run cases, with a focus on car/pedestrian incidents, from across the country since Jan. ‘010. If you know something about any of these incidents, or one that I’ve missed, do the right thing and call the police, even anonymously. After a respite from keeping the list, it restarted in January 2019, highlighting one case a day. If there’s a case you’ve seen that deserves highlighting, drop me a line at hickey@brianphickey.com.

12337. “I squatted down and I just reassured her there you’re not alone, this is going to be okay,” Carol said.”I didn’t know if she could hear me, so I prayed with her and I just kept telling her, ‘You’re okay, we’re okay, you’re going to be okay. They were happy to hear that, but they kept saying, ‘But we want to know who did this,’ you know they kept saying that.”

12338. “I think it makes it so much harder for the family when it’s a hit-and-run case,” said John Greenfield, an editor for Streetsblog Chicago who has covered transportation safety and traffic fatalities across the city for the past decade. “They’ve already lost their family member. They don’t want the injustice of the person who did this wrong going free while they’re suffering the pain of losing their family member.”

12339. “What’s specifically alarming is that the 108,755 hit-and-run crashes, 304 times someone left the scene and someone was dead. And that’s an increase of over 18% (across Southwest Florida) from the last year,” said Greg Bueno, spokesperson for the Florida Highway Patrol in Southwest Florida. “These are double-digit increases from an already high statistical problem that we’re having.”

12340. “There should be some police officer or like they have at the schools or something blocking people,” Zuko says. “Some type of cones to help people not get hit because it’s just horrible. I heard there was another accident a couple of weeks ago where somebody was hit. It just seems like it’s been a pattern this summer.”

12341. “I just heard like a car, I don’t know if it’s braking or trying to go really fast. Next thing you know, I was on the floor and can’t move,” said Aleman. “I just remember all of a sudden being on the floor and the warm blood going through my face. There was this one really nice man by my side telling me, ‘Stay with me, don’t fall asleep.'”

12342. A bicyclist is dead after being struck by an SUV on Indianapolis’ west side Friday night, according to police.

12343. Police are looking for the driver of a hit-and-run accident early Sunday morning that killed one pedestrian and left another injured on the side of I-95.

12344. Shocking video shows the moments a New Jersey councilwoman allegedly plowed down a bicyclist while speeding through an intersection and kept going in an apparent hit-and-run accident. Jersey City Councilwoman Amy DeGise is accused of failing to slow or stop her car after striking the cyclist at the intersection of Forrest Street and Martin Luther King Drive last week.

12345. A man was killed in a hit-and-run crash late Saturday night in Hermosa on the Northwest Side.

12346. UPPER CHICHESTER, Pa. (CBS) — Pennsylvania State Police say they have located the blue pickup truck involved in a deadly hit and run on Interstate-95 in Upper Chichester Township, but the driver is still at large. The vehicle was found in Delaware on Thursday. On Friday night, a vigil was held in memory of Maurice Pinkard.

12347. Paramedics and officers found the victim, later identified as 59-year-old Kerry Brown, on the ground and immediately began life-saving efforts, but he died on scene.

12348. GENESEE COUNTY, MI — A 24-year-old male was pronounced dead Saturday night after a hit-and-run crash in Mundy Township, police said.

12349. LVMPD said the crash happened July 30 around 9:40 p.m. at W. Charleston Boulevard west of Essex Drive. According to police, a male pedestrian was walking northbound across Charleston outside a marked crosswalk when a dark colored sedan hit the pedestrian. Police said the sedan drove away without stopping to help the man, identified by police as a 49-year-old man. The man was taken to University Medical Center where he later died.
