Hit-and-Run America, Vol. DCCCLXXI

An ongoing collection of unsolved hit-and-run cases, with a focus on car/pedestrian incidents, from across the country since Jan. ‘010. If you know something about any of these incidents, or one that I’ve missed, do the right thing and call the police, even anonymously. After a respite from keeping the list, it restarted in January 2019, highlighting one case a day. If there’s a case you’ve seen that deserves highlighting, drop me a line at hickey@brianphickey.com.

12251. Police have arrested a motorist suspected in the hit-and-run death of a teenaged pedestrian in a North County crosswalk. Jon Edwin Kiesel, 70, of Escondido, was taken into custody and jailed at 12:54 p.m. Sunday on suspicion of felony hit-and-run, said Escondido police Lt. Scott Walters.

12252. Two young girls were rushed to the hospital Sunday afternoon after being struck by a vehicle on Dearborn’s west side. The person behind the wheel took off.

12253. “I really hope they find the person responsible for plowing into five people and injuring some, and killing my mom and hurting my nephew because nobody deserves that. And for them to just hit them and just run? It’s cowardly. It makes no sense,” said Lesley, “And my mom just believed in the goodness of people and for this to happen to her doesn’t make any sense at all.”

12254. “This, I can certainly recover from,” he said. “I am going to come back better. I’m just fortunate it is not worse. That I didn’t have a brain injury.”

12255. Police said the man was pushing a shopping cart through the crosswalk on the northern part of the intersection, westbound across Harbor Boulevard, against a red light. Reports indicate the victim was first struck by a white Dodge Charger, which was passing the intersection and traveling on a green light south on Harbor Boulevard. The driver did not stop. Seconds later, a black Jeep Wrangler, also traveling south, struck the man and also did not stop, police said. About two minutes later, the third car, a white, two-door Honda Civic traveling in the same direction, hit the pedestrian a third time and also failed to stop, according to police.

12256. “Mark was a sweet soul,” Elaine Manco said. “Mark had blunt force trauma to the head and didn’t deserve to die this way. My life will never be the same.” Mark Manco was a New Jersey state champion while playing on the Shawnee High School football team, and at the time of his death was playing semi-pro with the South Jersey Thunder, according to his obituary. He was a fan of Philly sports teams.

12257. The Marietta Police Department said a 53-year-old man died about 10 days after being struck by a car during a hit-and-run. Police said the suspect, who was released on bond, has been arrested and their charges were upgraded.

12258. Police claimed that as Dunleavy sped through the intersection, he hit Richard Geere, 59, who was walking in the crosswalk. The victim from Burleigh was pronounced dead at the scene. Dunleavy is accused of continuing to drive west for at least another mile and a half before crashing near the 200 block of Indian Trail Road. He was arrested after trying to get away on foot, according to police.

12259. A woman was killed in a hit-and-run crash Tuesday morning in San Jose. It’s the 21st pedestrian fatality this year in the city.

12260. The driver briefly exited the vehicle to remove the injured children from the middle of the roadway before driving off. Police say the suspect did not render aid to the children, or report the incident to authorities.

12261. “The kid flew over and over like a flipping car, he flew 30 feet,” said Pete Annis, the owner of the truck. “If it had been me at my age, I wouldn’t be standing here.”

12262. Henrico Police are asking that anyone who has information about a hit-and-run that happened on June 19 to contact them, as they are currently searching for the driver who hit a cyclist on the road before driving away.

12263. BRIDGETON, New Jersey (WPVI) — Police have released photos of a vehicle being sought in connection with a hit-and-run that seriously injured a man in Cumberland County, New Jersey.

12264. Rock Island police are investigating after a hit and run crash injured a child riding a bike Sunday.

12265. The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department is searching for a driver after a pedestrian was killed Wednesday night in a hit-and-run crash on East Sahara Avenue near Chapman Drive.

12266. The Austin Police Department is asking for the public’s help in locating a vehicle and driver involved in a fatal hit-and-run in South Austin.

12267. The 56-year-old victim was struck at night along the Merritt Island Causeway near the Hubert Humphrey bridge in the westbound lanes, troopers said. A vehicle hit the man, sending him into the Indian River, then drove off.

12268. Officers found Terrell Hilliard, 41, of Texarkana, Texas lying in the 11700 block of the service road about 12:45 a.m. He died later at a hospital. Police believe he was struck by a vehicle that left the scene.

12269. “For me, it was just a shock,” said resident Jim Hanan. “It’s just concerning that someone would not even stop for a woman walking three dogs. How obvious is that?”

12270. The evening of the incident, Rhett was bicycling with his fiancé, who was pulling their two-year-old daughter behind her in a bike seat. “She said she heard a car coming, so she moved off the road, she had no sooner gotten off the road than she heard the crash. She turns around and sees Rhett laying in the middle of the road.”

12271. The Orange Police Department is investigating a hit-and-run auto-pedestrian accident that put a child in the hospital Thursday evening.
