In late June, 56-year-old Karen Benjamin was run down by a hit-and-run driver as she jogged in Central Islip, NY. She would die a month later, a result of the severe head trauma suffered when scumbag parolee Thomas Costa left her for dead in the street.
I’ve since been in touch with Benjamin’s daughter Lindsay, who has taken the pain of loss and turned it into motivation to push for stricter hit-and-run laws.
It’s a heartbreaking story, as hit-and-runs are wont to be.
On Tuesday, Lindsay posted a letter to scumbag Costa on her website, and it’s a powerful one, one that I hope you’ll read beyond the excerpt I’m going to paste beneath here.
I know the raw emotion that she’s feeling. I’ve felt it myself. I just hope her words help affect change in New York.
I don’t know if I will ever be able to forgive you for what you did. Maybe one day I can learn to forgive you for being a piece of shit. But- not yet. I am not ready yet.
I hate you Thomas Costa & I sincerely hope you are rotting away in that jail cell that you now so dearly call home.
