About That Wyomissing/Aliquippa State Championship Football Game…

Congratulations to the Wyomissing Spartans for winning the PIAA AA high-school football state championship game just one week after throttling the Imhotep Panthers in Philly.

Their 17-14 victory over the favored team from outside Pittsburgh featured Jonah Bowman‘s 52-yard field goal which broke the previous state record by five yards. It also, as you can see in the picture above, featured a touchdown which actually wasn’t as Mason Smith actually flicked the ball in celebration before he crossed the goal line a la Desean Jackson.

This isn’t to say they wouldn’t have won otherwise. I think they had a certain charm that would’ve had them hoisting the trophy regardless and despite a pair of turnovers from Notre Dame-bound standout Alex Anzalone. Just an interesting side note from a wonderfully entertaining game.
